If jewelry were pickup lines, the charm necklace would have to be “Was your father a thief? Because he stole the stars from the sky and put them in your eyes.”
In other words, been there, done that. (And forget about coming home with us.)
More likely to get your attention: rising star Samantha Goldberg. The Chicago-based jewelry designer and silversmith has flat-out rejected the semiprecious stone craze, finding her match in the more unusual Brazilian druzy quartz.
The dreamy rock, which looks like something out of a sci-fi movie, is mined for its sparkly interior.
After the crystal is removed, it is cut, polished, and coated with titanium, platinum, or copper. Next the stone is placed in a vacuum chamber where the surface is vaporized, leaving behind a celestial-looking masterpiece.
The more exotic the rock the better; Goldberg looks for shapes and cuts that no one else will have, so each piece is one of a kind and sure to get noticed.
And not in an “Are you okay? Because heaven’s a long fall from here” kind of a way.
