You entered the secondhand store a relatively well-adjusted, basically normal person. After taking the sales clerk’s advice, you emerged from the dressing room a dead ringer for Dr. Frank-n-Furter.
Luckily, Sielian Lie knows the difference between playing dress up and actually getting dressed up. Her new eponymous shop, opening today, is devoid of all the kitschy, kooky clothing that gives vintage a bad name.
Known for high-end taste and low-end prices (which start around $60), Lie’s always excellent collection of organized, beautified, and dry-cleaned dresses has kept fans coming since she got her start at the Fairfax Flea. Among the mix of collegiate frocks from the ’50s, ’60s shifts and sheaths, and snazzy daytime and disco looks from the ’70s, you’ll find a few hippie-chic pieces that Lie designed herself (look for the Indonesian prints).
And although she pulls from the past, she’s right in time with the styles of today. So no matter what you pick up, you don’t have to worry about looking dated when you wear it.
Because who really wants to do the time warp again?
Sielian’s Vintage Apparel, 9013 Melrose Avenue, between Doheny Drive and Almont Avenue, West Hollywood (310-246-9595).
