Work in Progress

You vacuum daily. Stay late at the office. Call your granny weekly. No one would doubt that you’re a diligent soul.

But you’re positively slacking compared to master chef Joël Robuchon.

A massively big cheese in the ’90s (six Michelin stars, “chef of the millennium”, trained Gordon Ramsay and Richard Neat), Robuchon came out of a famously short-lived retirement by opening L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, a gloriously received eat-at-the-counter restaurant in Paris a few years ago. He repeated the format in Las Vegas, Tokyo, New York and now — enfin — London.

The sleek hangout (all shiny red and black lacquer) serves simple, rigorously excellent food. L’Atelier officially opens on 5 September, but you can start booking today (which we advise you do, or you’ll never get a table).

On the menu: prosciutto with toasted tomato bread, langoustine carpaccio and caramelized foie gras with crispy bacon, followed by glazed quail or hanger steak and intricate puddings like green chartreuse souffle. Get the nine-course menu to maximise your tasting experience.

Want to see the master (and his underlings) at work? Sit at the counter to watch them prepare.

That surely beats Hoovering the bedroom anyday.
