Middle Kingdom

Itching for something new? Go west. Well, as west as Middleburg.

Sights
Check out the tiny and unfailingly quaint town of Waterford, founded in 1733 by Quakers. Take a walking tour of Main Street and see the jail, The Graham House of 1810, and other early structures.

Visit on May 12 and help support the MS and Leukemia & Lymphoma societies by attending the America’s Cup of Polo match between U.S. and British teams (Morven Park, 41793 Tutt Lane, Leesburg; 703-777-2890). Plenty of food, men in tight pants, fireworks, and a performance by Journey should make for a good time.

Bites
For a picnic lunch, stop by Market Salamander, the gourmet shop from Sheila Johnson and Equinox’s Todd Gray (200 West Washington Street, Middleburg; 540-687-8011). Fill your basket with cheese, meats, crab cakes, and wine.

sweet as pie!Satisfy your sweet tooth with treats from the Little Apple Pastry Shop (23217 Meetinghouse Lane, Aldie; 703-327-2500). Pies, cinnamon rolls, and biscuits are handmade daily by mother-daughter team Kay Pitts and Margaret Hawes.

Drink in local flavor at Chrysalis Vineyards, which grows the native norton grape, in addition to French and Spanish varietals (23876 Champe Ford Road, Middleburg; 540-687-8222).

Delights
Plan your trip around the Delaplane Strawberry Festival (May 26-27), and you’ll be rewarded with strawberry eating championships, quilt raffles, vintage cars, and crafts (Sky Meadows State Park, 11012 Edmonds Lane, Delaplane; 540-592-3556).

Bring the charm home with antiques, art, and decorative accessories from the Middleburg Antique Emporium (107 West Washington Street, Middleburg; 540-687-8680).

check in!Good Nights
At the end of the day, check into The Ashby Inn (692 Federal Street, Paris; 540-592-3900). The charming spot offers chef Brian Pellatt’s seasonal menu and cozy country bedrooms.

The name notwithstanding, we bet you’ll find nothing in this ’burg to be middle-of-the-road.
