Pedal Pushers

If only we could bike through Loop traffic like Miss Gulch in The Wizard of Oz.

The way she zooms through Dorothy’s house, snagging Toto, cackling wildly, is totally badass. Witch or not, the lady can ride. You wish you had that moxie.

Click your wheels three times and you can. Just ask the Cycling Sisters, a local women’s cycling organization that teaches bikers how to fix flats, lube chains, adjust brakes, and build bikes through year-round, low-cost (or free) workshops.

The 400-plus, all-volunteer group also gives safety lessons. They won’t help you dodge falling houses, but they’ll teach you how to ride through rough neighborhoods, avoid harassment, and stay self-sufficient and confident on the road.

The Sisters (brothers are welcome, too) organize regular bike outings, from ice cream social rides to a 47-mile group trip through Chicago’s South Side.

Try doing that on a broomstick.
