The Family Jules

Soup or salad? Single harvest or multiple vintage?

Eating out has become the bane of the indecisive.

At Bar Jules, the new Hayes Valley cafe/restaurant, they’re keeping it simple. The less-is-more menu, posted daily on chalkboard and online, features what’s fresh and in season. Period.

Chef/owner Jessica Boncutter has cooked at Zuni and Hog Island Oyster Company, so local and sustainable ingredients prevail. Starters might include escarole heart salad with parsley, walnuts, and Parmesan; your main could be oxtail stew or yellowfin tuna with shelling beans in anchovy lemon sauce.

The space recalls Parisian bistros (woven chairs and stools) and classic Cali (handcrafted wooden tables and floors).

They’re serving dinner and Sunday brunch; lunch starts in January. They don’t take reservations — oh, and BYOB for now.

Not like you have a choice.
