Change of Heart

Though it’s been called “ugly cool,” Lonely Hearts is looking mighty pretty these days.

Started by Helene Morris, Aimee McFarlane, and Steve Ferguson (who met while snowboarding in Aspen), this New Zealand label isn’t for the girly girl (one tunic last season was printed with a gaping cartoon monster mouth).

Morris says they’re inspired by comic books, science fiction, and “any movie with Vanilla Ice.” But even with that hiply androgynous backbone, Lonely Hearts has decidedly feminine smarts (slouchy but graceful tailoring and a sexy, relaxed silhouette).

Lightweight chambray denim is a trademark for the spring collection, popping up in tops, pants, and one particularly adorable micromini jumper. Slim-fitting pants are paired with billowing dresses; a black-and-white checkered get-up gives the season a whimsical, carnivalesque flair.

And with winter still looming, whimsical is a good place to be.
