Low Key

Island hopping usually entails dubious airplanes, dirt runways, and flashbacks to poor, long-lost Amelia Earhart. But you can hop anxiety free to Key West (though you may still enjoy some Klonopin on the Overseas Highway).

FLOP
Facing the Gulf of Mexico, rooms at Hyatt Key West Resort and Spa are freshly spiffed up. Out are pastels and wicker; in are pale wood, stainless steel, and lime and coral accents. Hand over your car keys: Everything from the sunset celebration to the beach, shops, and restaurants is in walking distance.

treasure!

SHOP
Tuberose cologne. Salted caramels. Moroccan tea glasses. A palm-frond market basket trimmed in silver leather. Boutique-cum-apothecary Bésame Mucho is chockful of treasures that you never knew you had to have.

CHOPS
Old Town neighborhood bistro The Good Life charms with ’70s pendant lamps, velvet armchairs, and cozy banquettes. Debate your favorite entree (sweet potato-shrimp cakes, mahi mahi wontons, goat cheese-topped scallops with wild mushroom risotto) over dessert: banana bread French toast.

polly wanna cracker!

STOP
On Lloyd’s Tropical Bike Tour, stop and smell the frangipani, jasmine, and ylang-ylang. Learn about local architecture, birds, and ghosts. Taste seasonal fruits, including mango, banana, papaya, and sugar apple. And meet fascinating and eccentric locals, none more so than Lloyd himself.

SOP
After all the walking (sightseeing not bar crawling, of course), soak your weary trotters at SpaTerre with a Key Lime Margarita Pedicure. Both the footbath and the cocktail that goes with it include a salt rim and slices of lime.

Which are Key to any good vacation.
