Down Mexico Way

Whether it’s a meal, a snog or a bowl of salted peanuts, it’s hard to find anything for nothing in this current financial climate.

It’s a barren land for freeloaders out there.

Bankers and hedgehogs might be itching to get out, but Chilango, a groovy new Mexican restaurant, opens in the city today. The cheap and cheerful joint serves tacos, burritos and Mexican-style salads alongside black beans, guacamole and roasted tomatoes.

Simple, fresh food is made in an open-plan kitchen, and prices — starting from £4.90 — are somewhat credit crunch friendly; eat in or take away. If you head down there today between 11.30 a.m. and 8 p.m., they’ll give you a complimentary burrito in exchange for a business card.

So extinct is such a concept, you may have forgotten what it is. Let us remind you.

It’s a free lunch.
