Start with a word-stamp belt from local designer Meghan McGuinness. Working from her Wilmette garage-cum-studio, she hand-presses special messages into her work — Jane Eyre poems, fables about happiness, the definition of peace.

McGuinness starts with antique brown leather belts and then hand-carves brass or brass-nickel buckles, casting a limited number of each. Pick one up from her brand new website, which launched this past weekend.

She also does custom work, stamping any four-line life message, love poem, or mantra you choose.

Just make sure it’s not below the belt.
