Ace in the Hole

You used to think Granny made the best pies in the world. Then you discovered she bought ’em at QFC and your world was rocked.

Imagine how duped you’d feel if the old bird wasn’t your nana at all but rather a sweetly paid stand-in. The thought is horrible, so maybe you should just read about it in Kevin Wilson’s brilliant collection, Tunneling to the Center of the Earth.

The bizarre, imaginative tales feature characters grappling with major life changes in unlikely scenarios. “Blowing Up on the Spot” follows a young man who works at the Scrabble factory as he deals with the spontaneous combustion of his parents. Recent grads in the titular story dig a hole under their town to escape reality.

We especially love “Worst-Case Scenario” about a balding 27-year-old whose job is to inform people of bad things that could happen.
