When Little Bo Peep lost her sheep, she waited around like a moron.
Apparently, she hadn’t herd.
She could have been sipping a glass of the good stuff from Black Sheep Finds or Piedrasassi, two small-batch wineries owned by Chicago native Peter Hunken. (His wife, Amy Christine, is co-owner of the former.)
Hunken’s romance with the grape began with an apprenticeship in 2001. Today he produces limited-edition bottles in a tricked-out warehouse behind a Home Depot in California. The hands-on approach (he has no employees) allows for high-quality, affordable, and seriously artisanal wines.
Available now: subtle, soft 2006 Genuine Risk cabernet; dark, fruity 2007 Hocus Pocus Syrah; peppery Holus Bolus Syrah.
Hunken doesn’t use distributors; he sells every bottle himself.
Not so baaaaad.
