Girl goes to India. Girl returns with om tattoo and suitcase full of sarongs and beaded accessories. Girl starts dressing like a hippie, standing on her head while planning an East-meets-West fashion empire.
It’s the same old story.
Nicole Chen on the other hand returned from working as a buyer and designer in Southeast Asia and created Wishes upon Stitches — a collection of necklaces, earrings, rings and brooches that, while inspired by India nomads, is anything but ordinary.
The handmade collection incorporates vintage and antique fabrics (think Granny’s cheongsam and silk block-print saris) combined with luminous and colourful laser-cut acrylics, then finished with hand-embroidering.
Bollywood kitsch not your thing? The website is still worth a look.
It’ll have you in stitches.
