Last year, when rumor had it Mike & Chris — little leather jackets and all — might be ghosts of sportswear seasons past, tears were shed. Then fans found out it would carry on, but the original designer, Mike Gonzalez, would depart for a much-needed disco nap.
He’s up. And his independent eponymous new line lands today.
Continuing to draw inspiration from his wife and muse, Christine Park-Gonzalez, the native Angeleno’s refined, street-smart separates are a kiss and a wink to glam disco. Navy and red inject color into the mirror ball palette (bright copper, bronze, and gold), while raw leather braiding, double zippers, epaulets, and oversize buttons nod to postpunk.
Shimmy in a geometric silk georgette cocktail dress and metallic vest, then toughen up with a fitted moto jacket or buttery bomber with zip-out hoodie. During fits of Saturday night fever, stow the tuxedo jacket or convertible microblazer/trench at coat check. Double-layered tanks paired with petal-panel sweatpants make good the morning after. Gonzalez is staying alive all right.
