Casting director Laine Rosenberg says the main thing she looks for in a model’s walk is confidence. “When a girl really knows how to walk, it comes naturally. It’s like she is gliding.”
Rosenberg photographs all the models — once with hair over their shoulders and again with hair behind — to reference when she’s making final decisions. In two days, she and Benz saw about 100 models. “We never go for curvaceous exotic types,” Benz says. “We want someone who’s interesting, quirky, beautiful. No bombshells.”
Benz and Rosenberg check out a model’s portfolio. During the casting, it was the first thing they asked for, followed by, “Are all the sizes on your card correct? Even your shoe size?”
Benz and Rosenberg watch another model walk. Says Benz: “We’re looking for fresh faces. We’ve used girls who were new when we saw them and have since turned into huge models with major ad campaigns.”
Benz and Rosenberg generally study a portfolio for about two minutes. Says Rosenberg: “We can usually tell if a girl is going to work for us as soon as she walks in. Sometimes you’re just in awe of this thing in front of you. You just can’t believe this girl standing before you is only 16.”
Little-known fact: Benz used to be a model himself. In this photo, he’s looking at one of his old head shots. When we told him he looked like Leonardo DiCaprio, he said, “That’s who I was desperate to look like in high school.”
