Birchbox's Katia Beauchamp Shows Us How

You know those people in the world who seem to never have bad hair days? Birchbox co-founder Katia Beauchamp is one of them. In this video, she shows us how to do a cool twist-around side-bun updo using just dry shampoo, a teasing brush, elastic, and some pins.

Josh Ritter and Dawn Landes Perform in Their Kitchen

We could hate them for being so perfect — if married musicians Josh Ritter and Dawn Landes weren’t so nice. They had us at “Hello. How about some coffee?” and barely batted an eye when we invaded their adorable Brooklyn apartment to shoot this week’s video.

The low-key, stylish couple — who are about to celebrate their first anniversary — set up a guitar and keyboard in their kitchen and performed “Southern Pacifica.” It’s off Ritter’s album So Runs the World Away, coming out May 4.

Both Ritter and Landes (whose album Sweet Heart Rodeo came out in January) have a folksy, borderline country sound we can’t get enough of. And they both sing about love — in a sweet, noncheesy way — a lot. It must be nice living with your muse.

The Cure for the Common Run

The Cure for the Common Run

We Take Kangoo Jumps Exercise Shoes for a Field Test

That elusive runner’s high. We’ve heard about it, but until now, it seemed as hard to find as a flight out of Iceland.

We might be getting closer though (literally) with Kangoo Jumps, rebound exercise shoes that make you feel like you’re on a miniature trampoline.

The manufacturer, predictably, suggests major advantages of wearing them while jogging, claiming everything from improved posture to joint protection (less jarring on the knees) to just a harder overall workout. They are, however, exceedingly weird looking.

But before we recommended them to you, we had to try them ourselves, accompanied by Mario Jone’t Green, Kangoo Jumps’s New York rep (he calls himself “Avatar”). What we got: a lot of attention. A lot. But also a pretty intense workout.

And now we finally understand that whole “high” thing.

Available online at kangoojumps.com, $230-$290.

Pizza a Casa: Pizza Self-Sufficiency Center

Pizza a Casa: Pizza Self-Sufficiency Center

DIY the Best Pie Ever

Pizza: Even when it’s $1.50-slice-from-Tony’s Down the Block bad, it’s pretty good. And as dozens of artisanal, Naples-trained, wood-fire-building, San Marzano-using obsessives have recently demonstrated, a fresh, hot pie can be ambrosial.

Thing is, you have to wait in line for that. But you can skip the queue after taking a class at Pizza a Casa: Pizza Self-Sufficiency Center, where you’ll learn to make your own.

Founder/pizza scientist Mark Bello, featured in today’s video, has honed his skills for more than fifteen years (he estimates his annual slice intake to be in the thousands). During the four-hour class, you’ll learn all his secrets, from the best way to roll dough to when to add herbs for optimal flavor.

You can also host parties for up to twelve in the tchotchke-filled space. We predict it’ll be the new go-to for birthday celebrations. Just wear an elastic waistband.

Pizza a Casa: Pizza Self-Sufficiency Center, 371 Grand Street, between Essex and Norfolk Streets (212-228-5483 or pizzaacasa.com). Tickets ($150) available online at zerve.com.

Curl Your Hair

Curl Your Hair

Teach Your Old Do New Tricks

Seems simple enough: Buy a curling iron, twist hair around the blistering cylinder, and voila, ringlets.

So why does it so often turn into Toddlers & Tiaras and — to magnify the insult — fall flat five minutes later?

Find out what the experts are doing (and you’re not). Today’s Easy Does It video is How to Curl Your Hair the Right Way — and make it stay.

We consulted the geniuses at NYC’s Whittemore House, who showed us everything from how to hold the iron (who knew?) to which products to use (crucial).

And brace yourselves: Mousse is back.

Matchmaker, Matchmaker

A good man is hard to find. And a good man in New York City is taken or sketchy. Right?

Not at all. Today we’re launching DailyManCandy, a free daily e-mail informing you about our favorite single men in the metro area (don’t worry, we have a strict screening process).

We’ve got guys for every preference, from all the boroughs. Here’s a video introduction to two of our favorites — Theodore, a self-made businessman, and Sosha, an emerging musician.

We can’t guarantee you’ll find your soul mate. But you’ll at least find someone.

Freelance Whales Debut Album

Freelance Whales Debut Album

The Talent Show

When it comes to memorable band names, we’ve heard some good ones: The Moldy Peaches, Butthole Surfers, and, of course, Chumbawamba.

But newcomer Freelance Whales is our fave — and the music lives up to the awesomeness of the moniker.

In today’s video, they perform “Generator 2nd Floor” from their amazing new album, Weathervanes. To prove how great they are, we got ’em to play acoustically in an apartment hallway — no fancy sound mixing required.

The group honed their skills on the streets and subways of NYC, where they still play at the Bedford L stop on occasion.

If you want to see them live, they’re touring nationally through May 21.

For more information and tour dates, go to myspace.com/freelancewhales. Buy the album online at itunes.com.

Get Your Goat

If you were invisible, you’d attend premieres on Clooney’s arm (unbeknownst to him), carry your dog (so onlookers think he’s flying), and lounge in rich people’s apartments.

At Fair Folks & a Goat, you can do the latter — no superpowers required.

The appointment-only boutique/tea salon/art gallery is in a beautiful, address-undisclosed UES apartment next to the park — and every single thing in it is for sale, from one-of-a-kind antique furnishings to clothes from Archive Vintage.

Cofounder/curator Aurora Stokowski, featured in today’s video, hopes it will become a place for friends to congregate, shop, learn new things, and meet cool people.

All you have to do is e-mail her to get the shop’s address.

And show up in the flesh.

For more information or to make an appointment, go to fairfolksandagoat.com. And take a peek inside the shop.

Make Asparagus Soup with Sophie Dahl

Make Asparagus Soup with Sophie Dahl

Welcome to the Dahl House

There’s something irresistible about watching thin, beautiful people stuff their faces full of grub.

Which explains our love for Sophie Dahl, the former hotshot model-turned-chef whose unabashed love for all things delicious inspired her new cookbook, Miss Dahl’s Voluptuous Delights.

In today’s video, the lovely Brit — whose knack for writing might come from her grandfather, Roald Dahl — teaches us how to make an unbelievably tasty and simple asparagus soup with Parmesan. And you won’t believe there’s no cream involved.

Other recipes from the book include rice pudding with peach puree, pasta puttanesca, fish soup, Eton mess with rhubarb, and flourless chocolate cake. Charming/funny stories abound.

Talk about having yours and eating it, too.

Available online at amazon.com. For more detailed instructions, recipes, and pictures from Miss Dahl’s Voluptuous Delights, check out our photo gallery.

Drink Wine like a Pro

Drink Wine like a Pro

Head of the Glass

You should like your wine how you like your men: full-bodied, fragrant, mature, and sweet on the tongue.

So how come you keep drinking the vino equivalent of Spencer Pratt?

Stop settling and watch today’s Easy Does It video, in which we teach you the four things you should notice — and enjoy — when drinking reds and whites. Helping us out: Patrick Watson, the connoisseur behind Stinky Bklyn, Smith & Vine, The Jakewalk, and the new Brooklyn Wine Exchange.

Watson just opened a jazzy learning center at the Exchange, where he and others will teach courses on topics ranging from Spanish varietals to cheese pairings.

You might even meet your soul mate.

Brooklyn Wine Exchange, 138 Court Street, between Atlantic Avenue and Pacific Street, Cobble Hill (718-855-9463 or brooklynwineexchange.com). Wine classes held the first Wednesdays and Thursdays of every month (times vary) and most Saturdays at 4 p.m.
