Vacation time? No such thing when you’re a parent. So we asked children’s author Lesley M.M. Blume (Cornelia and the Audacious Escapades of the Somerset Sisters) for her favorite around-the-world, imagination-transporting picks.

What: Little Nemo in Slumberland, by Winsor McCay.
Why: Young Nemo is transported each night to the strange world of dreams.

What: The Tintin series, by Herge.
Why: Inspiration for budding young world travelers and reporters/detectives.

What: The Twenty-One Balloons, by William Pene du Bois.
Why: Follow Professor Sherman as his hot air balloon lands on the bizarre island of Krakatoa.
