When a chef is serving up something for the minis, the last thing she wants to hear is it’s as bland as baby food.
Aura chef (and mom) Rachel Klein experiments with food combos at home to help broaden her baby’s palate. Here’s her tasty take on a basic.
Apple and Pear Baby Food
Makes 1½ cups
(For ages 6 months and up)
Ingredients
2 apples (Red Delicious or Gala)
2 pears
1 stick cinnamon
Filtered water
1. Peel and core both apples and pears.
2. Place apples and cinnamon stick in a stainless steel pot and pour in enough filtered water to just cover.
3. Bring to a simmer and cook until fork-tender (not mushy).
4. Add pears and mix with a wooden spoon.
5. Cook two minutes.
6. Strain and reserve liquid (might be needed to thin out puree).
7. Remove cinnamon stick.
8. Puree in blender and cool.
Tip: If freezing, put puree in ice cube trays wrapped in plastic and pop a cube out when you’re ready to use.
Rachel Klein holds a mommy and me lunch and recipe demonstration every third Wednesday of the month, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m., at Aura, 1 Seaport Lane, Seaport District (617-385-4300 or aurarestaurant.com).
