Back-to-School Tips

Countdown to Kindergarten’s program director Sonia Gómez-Banrey offers these tips as the big day fast approaches.

1. Get a schedule in place one month before school starts (that means now!). Young children need their sleep.

2. Forget fancy new clothes with tricky zippers, buttons, and laces. Let kids wear something comfy, so they don’t fumble when in a hurry.

3. Practice opening lunch containers, juice boxes, and so on. Teachers will expect kids to help themselves.

4. Attend one of the transition events being held at parks, libraries, and community centers around town between August 17 and September 11.

5. Pick up a Countdown to Kindergarten tee, a readiness DVD and guide at your local library, and attend the free citywide kindergarten celebration at the Boston Children’s Museum on September 1.
