Back in the day, summer utopia involved exotic locales and hot romances. Now your summer fantasy is to get the kids organized before fall.
We rang expert organizer Lorraine Brock for her advice on whipping things into shape.
Be a Planner
Break the project into doable chunks and use a calendar to schedule tasks. Working in short spurts keeps kids focused and provides an immediate sense of accomplishment.
Create Purpose
Find charities that accept toys, stuffed animals, and clothes. Then get your pack rat excited about helping others. It’s easier to say goodbye to Mr. Bear if he’s going to a good home.
Teach, Don’t Preach
Telling your munchkin to “clean out the closet” is like saying, “go drive the car.” Set kids up for success (and tame mess) with systems like a binder for loose papers and cubbies for shoes.
Soon you’ll be living the (clutter-free) dream.
