Bonjour, mes copains.
My name is Sophie Souris. I live in the kitchen of a Paris restaurant (I’m a mouse) and love to trade recipes with my friends Henry and Cleo Raccoon. They live in San Francisco, under the porch of food writer Jerry Anne Di Vecchio. With illustrator and co-author Françoise Dudal Kirkman, she has created You’ve Got Recipes, a bilingual cookbook for kids. Here’s a taster.
Bisous,
Sophie
Gâteau au Yaourt
Ingredients
1 carton (6 oz.) plain yogurt
2 yogurt cartons of sugar
3 yogurt cartons of all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
2 tsp. baking powder
6 tbsp. melted butter
Grated peel of 1 orange or lemon
More butter and all-purpose flour
1. Scrape yogurt into food processor or bowl. Rinse and dry yogurt carton; use to measure sugar and flour, filling to rim and scraping top level each time. Add both, then eggs, baking powder, melted butter, and grated peel. Mix thoroughly.
2. Butter a baking dish (7 by 11 inches and at least 1½ inches deep); dust bottom and sides with flour. Spread batter into the dish.
3. Bake on center rack of oven at 325º for one hour until nicely browned.
4. Remove from oven and let sit on a heatproof counter for twenty minutes. Cut into rectangles and serve hot, warm, or cool with cream cheese and jam.
And be sure to leave the mice some crumbs.
