Bird Is the Word
Bird School of Music
Mozart in the womb? Check. Preschool apps done by first birthday? Check. Swim classes before they crawl? Check.
Free-form jam sessions at Bird? Check, one-two.
At the music-focused Russian Hill community center, kids are encouraged to form bands, write original music, and improvise — all of which teaches them to listen to each other and collaborate. (Okay, and look really cool.)
Each session culminates in an on-stage concert; past shows have included Police songs. (Just try to restrain Dad from singing along.)
If they’re not into rock and roll, they can learn the ukulele or master the dance routine to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” Or send your budding guitar prodigy to The Teachings of Ted Green.
And watch her spread her wings.

Wine and Whiners
What: Kids under 4 play while mom and dad sample cheese and vino.
Why: Unwhined.
When: Every Wed., 4-7 p.m.

Read for the Record
What: Children attempt to break the world record for the most kids getting read to from the same book on the same day.
Why: It’s one for the books.
When: Sept. 20. Thurs., 10 a.m.-noon.
Where: Fisher’s Children Center, San Francisco Public Library, 100 Larkin St., at Grove St. (415-557-4554).
