Spotting emerging musical talent from your sofa is starting to lose its appeal (looking at you, Simon Cowell).

This year Sofar Sounds: Songs from a Room is the real winner.

Organised by a trio of music lovers, the monthly live gigs are held in secret locations (a warehouse in Hackney, a posh Hampstead mansion) around town. The destination will be disclosed via newsletter, Facebook and Twitter closer to the performance date.

We can reveal the next gathering will take place in early July. Expect to hear fresh sounds — anything from an acoustic folk set to rock, soul or jazz numbers. Previous acts have included The Magic Numbers and up-and-coming bands No Flag Project, The Staves and, on one occasion, actor Robert Pattinson for a surprise vampire sabbatical.

The events are free, but space is limited and intended for artists, creative thinkers and those passionate about music. Apply to attend and find out if you have the X factor.
