Viet-Van Banh Mi Sandwiches Are Pho Real

Good Morning, Vietnam

viet-van london!

Remember when everyone warned you against eating street food in Asia? (You were never one to listen, but it’s too early to stomach that story.)

For an equally authentic experience — minus a trip to the hospital — try Viet-Van, the bright yellow three-wheeler food stall in North Cross Road Market where David Parkin serves traditional Vietnamese banh mi (£4) every Saturday.

Inspired by a holiday to Cambodia, Parkin, a Ritz hotel-trained chef-turned-stay-at-home dad, serves a simple menu that’s been drawing foodies from all over London. He barbecues caramelized chicken and marinated pulled pork (so tender it falls apart) while you wait and piles the meat on crispy baguettes filled with chili mayo, coriander, pickled vegetables and paté. Vegetarian options include tofu and portobello mushrooms.

And don’t worry, unlike the last time you dined on street fare, these ingredients are organic, fresh and locally sourced when possible.

So you can let bygones be Saigons.

Available Saturdays, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., at North Cross Road Market, North Cross Road, SE22.
