Class Project

Number of times per day you will soon find yourself …

  • Traversing London: four
  • Air-kissing someone you’d rather not: nine
  • Enquiring about the origin of a colleague’s drummer-boy jacket (when you know it’s from Topshop): fourteen

In other words, London Fashion Week begins on Sunday. Don’t relish the above? Head to Fashion, Film and Fiction at The Wapping Project.

It’s a veritable wonderland: pass through a giant wardrobe and you’ll find clothing and accessories by British designers including Preen, Robert Cary-Williams and Roksanda Ilincic. These one-off designs will revolve around the room on a huge conveyor belt, surrounded by chandeliers and massive mirrors. You can try them on in beach tents (overseen by St. Martins student from an umpire chair) before they’re auctioned off in aid of the Jerwood Charity at the end of exhibition.

Shown alongside, on screens secreted in giant chests of drawers, are fashion-related films by the likes of Mark Robbins and Steve Jackman, whilst children’s stories are played aloud in languages from around the world. It’s an awe-inspiring collaboration from some of the most creative minds in the country.

You might have to cross London to see it.

But at least you won’t have to wait an hour and a half for it to start.
