Marmite. John Galliano. James Blunt. The Office.
Britain has produced some mighty fine things through the years. Sometimes, however, we can’t help but cast our eyes across the sea for a few extra pleasures. Our American friends are particularly generous when it comes to sharing their homegrown talent — and we’re not just talking about Bliss spas, Reese’s Pieces and Lost.
This season, they’ve sent another gem our way.
Rafe (pronounced ‘Raffy’, just so you know) is the shoe designer du jour. He got his start at Bergdorf Goodman, and now his creations appear on every perfectly pedicured pair of feet on Park Avenue. His shoes are chic and groovy, in bright colours (for day) and sleek metallics (for night), and all are named after places of inspiration: Montana, Sao Paolo and even Marylebone.
There’s a small downside: the website from which Rafe shoes are available is no Bergdorf’s. It lacks the sophistication of a designer shoe shop, but it does stock some of the best names in the business: Beatrix Ong, Lulu Guinness, Georgina Goodman and Olivia Morris. All highly coveted.
And, you may happen to notice, all British.
