“The most exciting thing to happen anywhere in the World in the Year 2000.” — Tony Blair on the Millennium Dome, 19 June 1997.
Ah, hyperbole. As it turned out, on the exciting-world-events scale that year, the Dome ranked just below Cherie Blair’s hairstyle.
But now there’s a new addition to Greenwich that promises real thrills (and won’t remain empty until 2012): Belle.
This new boutique is packed with labels to die for. Belgian chic features largely, with designs by Francoise Pendville and Chine. (When they aren’t measuring potatoes and bananas for EU regulations, the Belgians make some fabulous clothes). Pieces by Danish designer Day Birger Mikkelsen, Marilyn Moore, Temperley and Velvet and accessories by Angel Jackson, Murano, Amanda Caines and Portia Gillies share the spotlight.
With its sleek grey interior, elegant chandeliers and comfortable armchairs, Belle has brought a touch of rococo chic to the sarf East. The place is utterly peaceful, and the staff are some of the most efficient in the capital.
Go there and prepare to burn your credit card. It’ll be money well spent.
Unlike, perhaps, some other projects.
