Yorkshire pudding isn’t a pudding, it’s a savoury potato-esque gravy-mopper. And Spotted Dick isn’t a sausage, it’s a pudding. And toad-in-the-hole contains exactly zero toads.

It’s no wonder British food can be a riddle for some.

For a better (mis)understanding of the above, head to The National Dining Rooms. The new restaurant and bakery is the latest project from Oliver Peyton, who, along with designer David Collins, has transformed The National Gallery’s former restaurant in the Sainsbury Wing into a classically understated space.

For tea there are freshly made Cornish pasties, scones and cream, and seriously chewy ginger snaps, as well as more than 30 types of tea. For supper, try Brit classics like fried haddock with mushy peas, rhurbarb trifle and oxtail soup — which, these days, of course, usually comes from a cow.

Just in case you were confused.
