China in Your Hand

China Power Station: Part 1

china!

If your idea of an authentic Chinese gourmet experience is a takeaway spring roll and a fortune cookie, you may need to re-educate yourself.

Here’s how to do it: from 8 October to 5 November, Yauatcha (you know; Alan Yau’s Michelin-starred Soho teahouse and dim sum restaurant) will temporarily set up camp in Battersea Power Station as part of China Power Station: Part 1, a celebration of Chinese culture (expect Part 2 in a few years). The groundbreaking Serpentine show combines video art, sound and architectural installations spread across the 380-metre site.

There are 150 bicycles for touring the grounds. You can refuel with Yauatcha’s mind-bogglingly intricate cakes and pastries, mouthwatering dumplings in bamboo baskets and fragrant teas.

It’s a cool and unusual way to immerse yourself in Chinese culture, with plenty of ideas to takeaway.

Now who’s a smart cookie?

China Power Station: Part 1, Battersea Power Station, Battersea Park Road, SW8 5BP. For tickets, go to serpentinegallery.org.
