Introducing the New Strawberry

pineberry pineapple strawberry!

What do you get if you cross a strawberry with a pineapple?

A pineberry.

We’re not trying to be funny. The new fruit — which arrives in stores today — has the same genetic makeup as a regular strawberry but smells and tastes similar to a pineapple (think sweet with a tangy aftertaste).

Originally grown in the wild in South America, the pineberry, which looks like an inside-out strawberry, was rescued from extinction when Dutch farmers began growing it to sell in Europe. The fruit starts out small and green, turns white, and is ready to eat when the seeds become dark red.

The albino strawberry will be on sale while it’s in season — the next five weeks only.

Available at Waitrose stores, £3.99 per box.
