Until recently, the East End’s version of a tasting menu included pie and mash, curry and 24-hour kebabs. (Not that we’re complaining.)
But with Viajante, a new destination restaurant from El Bulli alum Nuno Mendes, the neighbourhood throws its hat into the for-serious culinary ring.
With just 40 seats and minimalist Scandinavian-style decor, Portugese-born Mendes has carved out an intimate spot in the incredibly grand former Bethnal Green Town Hall. And much like his latest project, underground supper club The Loft, he’s enticing guests to sit back, indulge and stay awhile.
Sample exotic six- to twelve-course spreads of artistic wonderment — from squid tartare, pickled radishes, samphire and frozen squid ink jus to roasted celeriac, tapioca and São Jorge cheese. Or opt for the set lunch and watch Mendes and his chefs create the awe-inspiring dishes with giant tweezers. Here comes the neighbourhood.
