Got a chip on your shoulder?
Cheer up at Poppies of Spitalfields, the retro-style fish and chips shop specializing in old-fashioned British hospitality and home-cooked charm, opening today.
Run by Eastender Pat Newland (Poppie), the buzzing restaurant — complete with a 1958 jukebox and Formica-topped tables — serves Billingsgate-fresh Peterhead cod, haddock, plaice and more dipped in golden batter and fried to a perfect crisp. For those with more adventurous sea legs, there are homemade fish cakes and jellied eels; waist-watchers can dig into rotisserie chicken or grilled fish and Borough Market green salad.
Get your grub to go (wrapped in Poppies newsprint) or sit down to some English sparkling wine from a vintage coupe glass. Because when the chips are down, you’re fond of the finer things in life.
Poppies Fish & Chips, 6-8 Hanbury Street, E1 6QR (020 7247 0892 or poppiesfishandchips.co.uk).
