Fancy yourself a globe-trotting gastronomer? Peru-ve it.
Take a hike downtown to Chimu, Grand Central Market’s new lunchtime Peruvian take-out joint by Lazy Ox Canteen veterans Mario Orellana and Rolando Maldonado and Local’s Jason Michaud.
Native custom dictates that you order at the window (thankfully, U.S. currency is accepted) before decamping to a courtyard table to marvel at local sights, like historic railway Angels Flight and an elusive avian species known as the pigeon (pronounced pĭj’ёn).
First-time sojourners make tracks for classic dishes, like lomo saltado (wok-tossed sirloin and potatoes) and pollo a la brasa (flavor-packed roast chicken), washed down with house-brewed purple corn tea. Adventure seekers go off the map with inventive daily specials, such as the Creole-inflected carapulcra de cerdo (aromatic pork stew) and a revolving menu of ceviches.
Our compass points to delicious.
Chimu, 324 South Hill Street, between West Third and West Fourth Streets, Bunker Hill (213-625-1097).
