A No-Nap Plan from Wallaby Family Development Center

Ease Off the Afternoon Snooze

nap time transition!

He’s getting sleepy. Very sleepy. But not quite sleepy enough to nap.

When eliminating daytime slumber has everyone feeling cranky, it’s time for a plan. We asked Ericka Tullis, owner of Wallaby Family Development Center, for tips on transitioning tots away from nap time.

Keep It on the Down Low
“No nap” shouldn’t mean “no rest.” Replace sleep with a different type of R&R, like cuddling up for a story, collaborating on a simple puzzle, or having a quiet chat about the day.

Beware the Witching Hour
During the dreaded 3 to 6 p.m. time slot, schedule something special (mom-and-me yoga, a trip to the park or museum) to keep kiddo distracted. He’ll have so much fun, he won’t remember how tired he is. (Just don’t travel too far or he’ll fall asleep on the way home.)

Bump Up Bedtime
Surprisingly, kicking naps means more downtime for you. Start putting your little one to bed at least an hour earlier in the evenings and, once his internal clock adjusts to the new routine, you can look forward to later morning wake-ups.

Won’t that be a dream come true?
