Traditionally, vegan restaurants cater to a (how do we put this delicately?) Birkenstock and drum circle-type clientele.
But Tal Ronnen, a.k.a. the guy Oprah once called “the best vegan chef in America,” is out to rewrite the rules.
Replacing beaded curtains and Buddhist wall murals with white linen tablecloths and original Toulouse-Lautrec prints, his new upscale Melrose restaurant, Crossroads, which opens tomorrow, gives plant-based cuisine the Pretty Woman makeover it’s long deserved.
Decamp to an oxblood-colored banquette and order a small-batch whiskey, quinoa vodka, and/or biodynamic old-world wine to accompany tapas-style Mediterranean dishes like millet, lentil, and red quinoa flatbread and herb risotto-stuffed banana peppers. For a hearty second round, opt for biscuits smothered in morel mushroom gravy and artichokes with bearnaise and kelp caviar.
Planning to skip out on dessert (carrot cake ice cream, biscotti with lemon curd)?
Big mistake. Huge.
