Take a Shining to Smith + Mara

Elegant bijoux from a Los Angeles dream team

The end of 2013 is nigh, and your jewelry stash already feels so last year.

Start fresh with designs from SoCal-based brand Smith + Mara.

Co-creators and college BFFs Sara Smith’s and Mara Rothbart’s bijoux beginnings can be traced to their teens: Smith sold gems at local boutiques; Rothbart (a fourth-generation jeweler) broke into the business hanging out at the family shop. Ten years later, at the urging of friends, the pair set out to reinvent the classic stud.

The resulting Skimmer — a fourteen-karat-gold, elongated swoosh that shimmies up your lobe — spawned a host of variations that create the illusion of multiple piercings, including a diamond-strewn replica of the Big Dipper and the best-selling triangle trio. Bedeck below the neck with a complementary collection of geometric rings (we dig the deep V) and dainty chains (zigzags and spikes add edge). Jazzy cuffs are in the works.

Don’t drop the ball.

Available at Broken English, 225 26th Street, at San Vicente Boulevard, Santa Monica (310-458-2724 or brokenenglishjewelry.com); at smithandmara.com, $75-$2,100.
