An Insider’s Guide to L.A. Hair Colorists

Local beauty and wellness experts sound off

hair color insider's guide!

Out-of-the-box color has come a long way. But when it comes to major dye jobs, we’d rather not leave anything to chance (one minute is all it takes for platinum to turn brass). L.A’s top beauty and wellness experts agree that salon specialists are a sure bet. Here are some of their favorites.

Paz Stark
Founder of Stark Waxing Studio
Recommends: Sheri Román, Román Salon
The Reason: I think she has a light touch, and manages to stay on trend without being annoying about it. Her place has a calm courtyard and the staff is lovely. It’s all a perfect package for someone like me who has to go a lot to cover up the whites. She does highlights on me about twice a year, then we let it grow and ombre out. She’s also down-to-earth and honest, which is refreshing.

Sarah Gibson Tuttle
Founder of Olive & June
Recommends: Suzy Ashburn, Studio34 at Salon Republic
The Reason: When I first decided to move here from New York, I was terrified. I was in a long-term relationship with my colorist and didn’t think anyone could ever replace him. I met Suzy the same day I met my husband. Fate! She just gets color. My hair is blah brown and she manages to make it rich and glossy. Not to mention she’ll crack you up the entire time she’s making you pretty.

Shin An
Owner of Shin
Recommends: Tracey Cunningham, Mèche
The Reason: Since I’ve been at this location (three years), I’ve had more than a few clients in my chair who’ve been loyal clients of Tracey’s. I’ve always been pleased with her work. In my opinion, great color is all about tone and placement — Tracey has that down.

Maria Kelling
Director of Training at Tracy Anderson Method
Recommends: Jamie Boone, Argyle Salon & Spa
The Reason: Everything about the experience is amazing. From the moment you walk in the door, you know Jamie has your best interest in mind. Her assistant, Cori, gives the best shampoo and head massage; Jamie really takes her time and listens to your needs. With her expert and honest eye, I always leave feeling glamorous. Oh, and the hair pomade she uses smells and feels divine.

Kelley Baker
Founder of KelleyBakerBrows
Recommends: Sema Conde, Kyle Mathis Salon
The Reason: Whether I decide to go brunette, red, or blond, my hair always turns out natural and shiny. The best part is that she does house calls: As a single mom with my own company, I barely have time to sleep. Sema makes time for me whether it’s a late-night color session or early-morning blowout.

Danielle Charboneau
Director of Operations at Juice Served Here
Recommends: Omar Arillen, Fringe of Beverly Hills
The Reason: I left my favorite stylist, Marty Harper, back in New York when I fled five years ago for warm weather, blue skies, and palm trees. Since the breakup, it’s been difficult to find the person who gets my hair (it’s fine, straight, and doesn’t grow) and makes it look and feel fabulous. Omar does. I go blond ambition to the max — natural but bold with the perfect cut to grow into.
