Five Feet High & Rising

Naming a restaurant is no small feat.

So what gives with the quirky nomenclature of 5’ (aka Five Feet), the hot new restaurant opened by SoCal legend Michael Kang? We can speculate, but mum’s the word on what the name really means.

We do know that it’s generating serious buzz. For the backdrop, Kang has boldly transformed the old Le Colonial digs into a slick space where patrons wield chopsticks and sip martinis. The Asian-cum-French-cum-what-have-you cuisine includes dishes like lotus-wrapped spare ribs, green-mango-papaya salad, and tea-smoked prime filet. The jury’s still out on the quality — but every restaurant has its growing pains, right?

The coup? Mickey found a solution to the location’s Beverly Hills curse. To avoid Le Colonial’s troubles (remember those late-night noise violations?), the adjoining bar features a “civilized” happy hour. Called 5:15, the watering hole opens early for after-work libations and features five liquors in fifteen varieties.

If only we master our multiplication tables, maybe we could figure out what 5’ means.
