If Taryn Manning were any cooler, you’d probably hate her. She’s already an accomplished actor (The Practice, 8 Mile) and model (she sang with Marianne Faithfull in a Gap ad). But apparently, that wasn’t enough for Taryn. She had to go and make a record.
Boomkat, the band Taryn fronts with her older brother, Kellin, makes music that doesn’t care what its influences are, as long as they’re good. Hip-hop, Motown, the Beatles, and a hefty dose of ’80s dance are all in evidence on their first album, Boomkatalog One, which hits stores this week.
Miss Manning (“if you’re nasty,” she instructs à la Janet on track three) likes to give the occasional shout-out to stuff she likes. She also knows a thing or two about living in L.A.
Favorite coffee order: Starbucks’ tall, iced vanilla soy latte with extra ice (which, incidentally, gets a ringing endorsement in the song “Crazylove”).
Favorite shoe store: Sportie LA (7753 Melrose Avenue, 323-651-1553).
Favorite late-night snack: Del Taco … I get that real hot sauce. That pizza place on Hollywood and Cahuenga with all the bums around it (Greco’s New York Pizzeria, 6400 Hollywood Boulevard, 323-464-8212). And sometimes the Standard, because they have spinach and mashed potatoes (8300 Sunset Boulevard, 323-650-9090).
Favorite thing to do when stuck in traffic: Talk on the phone. I have this little tiny Panasonic that just came out. It’s so new that I had to get an adapter to make it work. It’s about three inches by an inch and a half. I have Hello Kitty phone charms hanging off of it that I got in Japan.
Favorite pizza: Hard Times Pizza (2664 Griffith Park Boulevard, 323-661-5656).
Favorite restaurant: Ago (8478 Melrose Avenue, 323-655-6333).
Favorite bar: Bar Deluxe (1710 North Las Palmas Avenue, 323-464-5571).
Favorite vantage point: Top of Runyon Canyon.
Favorite place to buy music: Amoeba Records (6400 Sunset Boulevard, 323-245-6400).
Where would we be least likely to find you? You’ll never find me on Santa Monica Boulevard on Halloween night. And CBGB in New York is my worst nightmare. I love hip-hop music and music with soul. Not screaming and guitars.
Leno or Letterman? Leno. And I love Conan.
Coke or Pepsi? Pepsi!
What’s it like being on Howard Stern? I just kind of played the game with him. I played along with all his sexual stuff. He ended up really liking me. Not everything was true that I said, but it’s funny to hear him go “Woooah!”
Most annoying L.A. place: The Beverly Center during Christmas.
The last book you read: The Alchemist.
Favorite airline: I like Virgin if I’m going overseas. It’s hip. Or if it’s in the U.S., American.
Favorite celeb sighting: Probably Demi Moore. At a Pussycat Dolls show. I really was starstruck, because I love Ghost. She’s beautiful and about as short as me.
First concert: Prince in Tucson. I was five. My mom took me. And I dressed up as Madonna. In the “Like a Virgin” dress.
Do you still listen to Madonna? I loved “Die Another Day.”
Favorite band to see live: Outkast.
Favorite jeans: Miss Sixty.
Favorite legal drug: Wine.
Favorite candy: Peanut M&M’s.
A chick after our own heart.
