Everyone has something to hide.
Some stash their Starfleet badges in their back pockets; others draw the blinds when it’s time to tune into another precious 90210 rerun. And some of us just like to wear very, very tight rubber clothes.
But a love of comic books? That’s nothing to be ashamed of. Just look at Secret Headquarters. The new shop is the sort of place anyone would be proud to be seen in: It looks like Brooks Brothers designed a library and let Frank Miller fill the shelves.
Paperbacks, graphic novels, and local talent like Johnny Ryan and Jordan Crane are on one side of the room; on the other you’ll find a wall of new comics from big publishers (SHQ is partial to DC) that’s updated every Wednesday. They also plan on hosting art shows and meet ’n’ greets, the first of which is tonight in honor of their grand opening. The party goes from 6 to 10 p.m. Artist Steven Weissman will arrive at 7 p.m.
And though the refined atmo may, at first, give off a collectors-only feel, the shop encourages enthusiasts to read and trade issues, not seal them in plastic and lock them up in a dark closet.
So if that’s the sort of thing you’re into, do it on your own time.
Secret Headquarters, 3817 West Sunset Boulevard, between Hyperion and Lucile Avenues, Silver Lake (323-666-2228).
