One Tamale, Two Tamale, Three Tamale, Flor

Good old-fashioned home cooking has always been your preferred miracle cure.

Meatloaf with the fam did wonders for the blues. Chicken soup kicked that cold’s ass — two times, quick. And who needed Mickey from seventh period when you had one of Grammy’s brownies?

These days, though, Ma’s not really around at 2 p.m. when her mac ’n’ cheese could be the only thing to save your cruddy day.

Turn that frown upside down and grab a fork. Flor Morena, a new eat-in/take-out resto, now serves comfort food from morning till late-night. Paying homage to her Mexican and African-American roots, owner/chef Shawnette Wright describes the menu as “blaxican”: Inspired by her pop, a native Tennessean, there’s soul food like spare ribs, fried chicken, and catfish po’boys. Her mom, who helps out in the kitchen, taught Wright everything she knows about tacos, burritos, migas, and tamales (the chicken and cheese varieties are particularly delish).

And, should your cravings be even more eclectic, holding their own amongst enchiladas, coleslaw, creamed corn, and baked beans are local flavors like the Californian Cobb and Silver Lake Caesar.

After all, there’s no place like home.
