Fruit for Thought

FallenFruit.org

Much thought has been given to the question of whether a tree makes noise when it falls in the forest.

Why not ponder something closer to home, like: If there’s an avocado tree in public space, can you grab it and make a big bowl of guac?

FallenFruit.org not only says yes, but they also tell you where to get the best loot.

What started as an art project mapping fruit trees in public spaces has grown into a sweet resource for those seeking fresh freebies. Currently there are tips on where to find everything from apples and bananas to limes and loquats throughout Silver Lake, Echo Park, Mid-Wilshire, and Hancock Park. More maps are in the works and they are eager for submissions, so if you want to graph your nabe or even simply send in a picture of your favorite mango tree, go for it.

And this is more than just easy pickin’s. The people behind Fallen Fruit hope to encourage folks to plant more trees so healthy produce can be available year round for everyone. They even want to start planting along the banks of the L.A. River.

So, by participating, you’re not just getting free goodies; you’re adding to the beauty of our fair city.

If, that is, you want to get all philosophical about it.
