Best of 2005: Pimp My Ride

Hear that? It’s the tune of 2006. Before we dive in, a shout-out to our favorites from 2005. Feel free to hum along.

Remember that new car smell?

When you first got behind the wheel, life was full of promises. No food in the vehicle. No smoking. No hurl-prone drunkards admitted. Your automobile was all set to be a pristine haven.

Things worked out differently. You’ve piled on the mileage fast and sometimes furiously. Add to that a few fendie bendies, a spill here, and a drooly sleeper there, and you’ve got a backseat like a NYC taxi’s.

Instead of sending your mobile office to the heap, drive it over to Rudy’s Custom Tops. Owner Pedro Rodriguez specializes in refashioning your ride to your specifications. A jackpot for label snobs, he’ll reupholster seats, dash, floorboards, ceiling (you name it) in Gucci, Fendi, Hermès, Louis (both Murakami and classic versions) or Dior logo fabric.

Rodriguez is also your man if you want to create your own stamp for the roof or put a portrait of Fido on your hood. Go ahead and bring in the leftover ultrasuede from your couch, and he’ll cover your seats with brass-stud detailing. As he says, “Nothing is impossible. You name it, we can do it.”

How’s that for a driving force?
