Travel: Can You Hear Me Now?

Globe Dialer Launches

The cause of international relations has been furthered by seminal advances in modern communication.

Most notably:
Western Union — Sending [stop] messages [stop] faster [stop].
E-mail — Who needs airmail stamps?
Skype — Talk free! (As long as you’re online.)

And now there’s Globe Dialer, a new service that lets you call internationally from your cell phone at rates cheaper than a land line.

How cheap is cheap? Eight cents per minute to Brazil, 3.5¢ to London, 4¢ to Hong Kong. And if you don’t have friends in Hong Kong, here’s your excuse to get some. Maintaining a ship in every port has never been easier.

Once you download the application, it works seamlessly (like a calling card that self-dials the clunky access number).

The plan works with Sony, Motorola, Nokia, and Treo Java-enabled phones; BlackBerry, Samsung, and LG are coming soon. You can try a sample call for free if you want to test your phone.

Of course, we’re still holding out for the best invention of all: the people fax, which allows you to press a button and end up in Amalfi.

But in the meantime, it’s never been easier to tell them you wish you were there.
