Here in California, it takes all kinds.
Take it from Bear Flag Wine, a blends-only label from young Central Valley makers Beth Culter and Hillary Forbess that’s just making its debut.
Red #1, Culter’s babe, is a deep, layered, and unexpected mix of zinfandel, alicante bouschet, merlot, and tempranillo revolving around petite sirah.
And then there’s Forbess’s plush, fresh, and peachy White #1 involving chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, symphony, French colombard, and muscat.
No need to fight over which to try first; each is less than ten bucks.
Making it that much easier for everyone to get along.
Available at Colony House Liquor, 22523 Pacific Coast Highway, off Sweetwater Canyon Road, Malibu (310-456-3327); Liquor Time, 7873 Santa Monica Boulevard, between North Fairfax and North Orange Grove Avenues, West Hollywood (323-654-5283). For more information, go to bearflagwine.com.

Turns out this is a Gallo wine. They bought the name from The Cheese Factory in Sonoma, but the wines are made with grapes from the central valley (I think). The Bear Flag white wine is an overly complicated mix of grapes--not a pleasant result. The red version is better, but just drinkable. At $7.99 at BevMo, it's not a huge bargain. But I really liked the label/s.

I've seen this wine around town at a few gallery openings and think the label is awesome. I think it's cool the wine company had an artist design the label and he's getting some exposure. I'm a red wine drinker so I'm partial to the red and really enjoy it.
