Don't Worm Your Way Out of This One

las perlas mezcal and tequila bar!

Raring to check out Las Perlas, the new laid-back mezcal and tequila den from the 213 gang? Take note:

- No passport required: Flat pastels, jukebox tunes, and trad wood furnishings will transport you to the best-looking bar off the Zócalo, but you’re still Downtown.

- For straight shooters, the blackboard lists rare bottles and small makers by region. Whether you’re after the richness of the Jalisco Highlands, Oaxaca’s smoke, or the Lowlands’s leathery style, you can sample almost anything by $5 half-ounce pours or commit to three ounces with a clay bowl and tiny cup situation (say olitas).

- Mixed feelings? Try the pineappley swizzle Disco Mariachi, spicy citrus Poblano Escobar, old-fashioned-esque Puro (a.k.a. The Big Boy), or any other of the fourteen rotating cocktails.

- Eat before you go (even if just to 7 p.m. happy hour), unless you’re into drinking high-proof spirits on an empty stomach: Pork rinds, Mexican peanuts, and bodega chips are all the bar serves.

Las Perlas, 107 East Sixth Street, at Main Street, Downtown (213-988-8355 or lasperlas.la). Opens Tuesday.
