What do you get when you cross boxing’s fists-of-fury fighting techniques with the gentle, composed techniques of Pilates?
Piloxing. It sounds like less of a freak accident when you hear Joseph Pilates himself was a boxer and makes even more sense when founder and trainer Viveca Jensen delineates the similarities: Both aim at a strong core, require intense focus, and to get through a session, it’s a good idea to remember to breathe.
Arrive for the group class, strap on one-and-a-half-pound weighted gloves (optional, and, if you decide to do it, truly exhausting), and engage in one hour of cardio-based interval training during which you’ll alternate through lengthening and strengthening moves, combinations right out of the ring, and some dance thrown in for good measure.
Don’t get used to anything (besides Jensen’s infectious, empowering enthusiasm); it’s never the same class twice.
Available at V Pilates, 4129 Cahuenga Boulevard, at Lankershim Boulevard, Toluca Lake (818-762-8855 or piloxing.com), $15 per class.
