Like barbecue invites and coconut-scented tanning oil, the espadrille always makes an appearance once summer hits.
This year, there’s a new version courtesy of Industry of All Nations.
Taking a cue from their fashion designer parents in Argentina, the three Gerscovich brothers set aside their respective design and architecture studies to make the jump to jute. They sourced the best natural materials for their debut unisex collection from like-minded enviromentalist manufacturers around the world. The braided soles are stitched in a small Uruguayan town using century-old techniques, while the soft, pliable canvas uppers are free of plastics and rubber, making for a 100 percent biodegradable alternasneak.
Choose from crisp white, basic black, or nautical navy. Whatever happens when the season’s over, the $35 price tag will help you take it in stride.
Available at Milkmade, 1413 Abbot Kinney Boulevard, between California and Milwood Avenues, Venice (310-581-8890 or shop.milkmade.eu); Mohawk General Store, 1102 Mohawk Street, at Sunset Boulevard, Echo Park (213-484-8162 or mohawkgeneralstore.net).
