The first cut is the deepest.
A Razor, a Shiny Knife
What: A feast full of flavors and techniques from the past with presentation of the future. Think triple-cream cheese frozen with liquid nitrogen and wine aged in barrels the size of two-car garages. Lessons in caviar and butter making, application of hydrocolloids, knife sharpening, and more whet your appetite.
Why: Vino and booze are paired with everything. Plus, they’re saving twenty spots just for us.
When: Sat. & Sun., 3-9 p.m.
Where: They give you the locale before the event. Tickets ($161) online at eventbrite.com.
Chinatown Summer Nights
What: This isn’t your nana’s block party. Watch traditional Chinese cooking demos, view large-scale outdoor video projections, get schooled in calligraphy, munch on dogs from Let’s Be Frank, and groove to KCRW DJs.
Why: This week’s theme is prosperity. Since gifts of dance are innumerable, join Ballroom Madness for tutorials in the waltz, fox-trot, and tango.
When: Thru Aug. 28. Every Sat., 5 p.m.-midnight.
Where: Chinatown Central Plaza, 933 N. Broadway, at Bamboo Way, Chinatown (213-365-0605). Admission is free.
MilkMilkLemonade by Rogue Machine
What: The first show in its Off the Clock series features a Carson McCullers-worthy cast of characters including an effeminate 11-year-old boy, his chain-smoking g-ma, an abusive pyromaniac, and a depressed chicken.
Why: There is singing. Also, it’s unabashedly adults only — prudish ears, be warned.
When: Thru Aug. 14. Fri. & Sat., 10:30 p.m.
Where: Theatre Theater, 5041 Pico Blvd., at La Brea Ave., Mid-City (323-930-0747). Tickets ($25) online at roguemachinetheatre.com.
Cedilla: a Suite of Cocktails
What: The gents of Comme Ça bring you eight specialty drinks for $8 each. Breadbar lends a hand with a special pizza starter menu in addition to its regular offerings.
Why: The Hot Pepper Smash (rye, lemon, honey, serrano chile, mint) and the Hundred Year Fizz (cognac, lemon, simple syrup, egg white, Pernod rinse, soda) won’t go down the wrong way on our watch.
When: Thurs., 6-10 p.m.
Where: Breadbar, 10250 Santa Monica Blvd., b/t Ave. of the Stars & Century Park W., Century City (310-277-3770).
Lickety Split & Lekkar Strak Deadstock Vintage
What: Dig these ’80s rayon pants ($60) with a pleated elastic waist, slit pockets, and drop crotch made from never-worn salvaged materials. It feels good when you know you’re down.
Why: You can touch them.
When: It’s Hammer time.
Where: Online at etsy.com.
