5 Places to Get a Picnic to Go

fall picnics!

There’s still time to eat outdoors. Pick up grub-to-go at these five restaurants.

The Larder at Tavern
One of three seriously luxurious picnic baskets for two, the St. Tropez is perfect for an oceanside sunset, with its duck rillettes, crudites, slow-roasted salmon, and — for those with a sweet tooth — assorted macarons. For a basket with a more Latin or Middle Eastern bent, opt for The Matador or The Brentwood, respectively. Boxes are $25 each and should be ordered at least 24 hours in advance.

Doughboys Cafe & Bakery
The picnic basket (yes, an actual basket) for two covers all the bases. Choose from a sandwich, a salad, a baguette with four spreads, a side of fruit, and a cookie. Add an item from the dessert bar for $2 (there’s the famous red velvet, but we’re suckers for the hummingbird cake). Baskets, which are $45, also come with two drinks, flatware, plates, and a tablecloth. Order a few hours ahead of time.

BLD
In a prepackaged picnic that’s perfect whatever your en plein air dining plans, BLD offers options from its full menu, from couscous and pasta salads to a buttermilk-battered fried chicken sandwich and tuna nicoise salad. A formidable selection of sweets and beverages are also up for grabs. There is no extra cost for a picnic box; simply pay per dish. Order at least six hours in advance.

The Larchmont Larder
Many hungry mouths to feed? Head straight to the deli case at The Larchmont Larder to satisfy your picnic needs. Instead of the usual enough-for-two portions, load your basket with salads, a cheese plate, or a slew of heartier entrees, including a half rotisserie chicken and roasted pork loin. For an additional $5, have your order packaged in a Bowl Box, which includes utensils, napkins, and plates.

Joan’s on Third
The Third Street market and eatery is serving its picnic baskets through the fall. Select a series of small plates to share or go big with main dishes like chicken Milanese, oven-roasted beef tenderloin, and poached salmon. Pack in wine and treats from the bakery, and you’re good to go. Order a day in advance.
